Marriage, Social Conventions, The Bible, and the Oppression of Women Marital status helped define the social role and effective rights of women. It is that womens changing and poorly defined roles, plus the application of a narrow view of Christianity by men, in the early ordinal cent ury, led to frustrations and a nonexistence of empowerment for women.
